He he, I thought you just got a Kindle. While I am enamoured by it too, I feel nothing can replace the good ol book in hand. We can read it, dog-ear it, share it, or tear it π Kindle will remain one of my dream items, but something that I won’t ever buy π
@Writerzblock,
I believe anything can replace anything (speaking of material things) in the long run π Will definitely be buying one soon.
The Kindle’s quite cheap now and though I bought mine for a little more, it’s even more affordable now.
I also hear there are some local alternatives for even less. The Infibeam is there though I haven’t tested it out.
It’ll replace all your paper books pretty quick once you get used to it! I should know. I gave up paper books way back in 2004 in favor of reading on handheld devices. Since then I’ve gone through a Palm Tungsten T, an O2 and an iPod Touch. But the Kindle is the best of them all especially since I work form home and hardly go out so I don’t have to carry it around with me.
If I was in a regular job, I would still be using my iPod Touch to read. A few minutes here and there – while waiting for public transport for example and it’s amazing how much reading you can get done. I read the entire decline and fall of the roman empire in snatches this way π
@Bhagwad Jal Park,
I do quite a bit of travelling and Kindle is going to help me while away the long hours π No heavy books to lug around, just one solitary Kindle. I find it the easiest thing to get used to something new, especially something like Kindle.
I haven’t used my iPod Touch for reading, mainly because of the small size. I confine myself to listening to music and playing sudoku on it. You really read all about the Roman Empire this way?! Amazing!
@Shail, It’s pretty amazing what can be done with just reading a little bit whenever one can. Of course, you might look a bit odd at a bus stop π
Kindles a desire, Apt the name
Like a book, yet not the same
A gizmo bright, will get all the fame π
Still, gimme a book, and I’m game π
Like Pallavi, I’d admire it, but would prefer a book. There is something in the colour, the smell and the feel of paper that is like nothing else.
Who knows, if I do receive it as a gift, I might yet find it indispensable :D!
@Usha,
There definitely is something in the smell of paper, I agree. But that is nostalgia. Kindle will let me do what I really want to do, read. And that’s all that matters. π π
All it kindled in me was some curiosity.
I would avoid spending money on it.
I have so many of these gadgets that I never use after the initial novelty wears off.
Any way, it makes no sense to get a Kindle now.
An Apple Ipad or Samsung Galaxy Tab or an Adam Tablet is a much better bargain. These do everything a Kindle does and much more.
Besides the charm of a good hard bound book is hard to beat.
And, if it is autographed by the author, it’s value is even more. Can a Kindle ever be autographed?
Regards
GV
@G Vishwanath,
Whenever I have gone in for new gadgets (for the kitchen) in the past, I have been advised against it by other women. ‘You will never use it after the novelty wears off’ has been a constant refrain. I have proved them wrong. π If I intend buying something, I have already thought of and charted out a use for it in my life. π
I am different that way. I admire authors, I love reading their books. But an autograph of theirs means nothing to me. An autograph has value for me ONLY when it is from someone known at a personal level, only when they sign/write something because of our relationship to each other. Besides what difference between a signature on a book and perhaps an electronic signature (in the future) on Kindle books?? π
I have seen ‘kindle’ but I prefer to turn the page by hand and read…
@Sandhya,
And I just want to read, book or Kindle π
I like the poem ! not too sure about kindle though ! like the feel of a book in my hand !
@Ruchira,
Wow, none for change it looks like, except for Bhagwad! π
I have yet to grasp the concept of KINDLE.. yeah i live in god knows what times but i still cant figure out what the hooopla is all about π
@bikram,
Lol, you better take a look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_Kindle
It sure looks too good for the gadget-loving kind…but I prefer the books – the smell of paper actually inspires me to read. π
U just go and get one. π
@UmaS,
I sure will. I love gadgets! π
I want, I want, I want! Yeah I love the smell of ink on paper but I can sniff it from others. Imagine carrying 200 books in one light gadget – you can never be lonely. I want sooooooo much
@Phoenixritu,
Ahhh someone like me at last! π
I thought you got one…and was celebrating!
Much as I like the concept, I can never ever read on a Kindle! I have to have a real book in my hand, smell the paper, feel the print…blah blah blah π
@Scorpria,
Lol, I am not surprised any more. Too many rooting for ‘book’! π
I am gonna celebrate soon, very soon π
Coming into this rather late but I bought a Kindle in February and LOVE it and all its features!
@Anne,
Hey, nice to see you Anne! You bet its a wonderful gadget! Enjoy your Kindle! π
