Some months back I happened to read an article. It was mentioned there in how during breaks in shoots, the (male) stalwarts of the Mallu movie scene and their (male) cronies sit around making unkind jokes about their female co-stars and the clothes they wear or rather do not. Though not the exact words, this is the gist of what they supposedly say during such gatherings:
“They (the female stars) don’t have to know acting. All they need to do is to take off their clothes and jiggle their butts and bosoms, not like us poor things who require talent and got to do some real acting to find success.”
On reading it, I was incensed. Let us leave the ‘they don’t have to know acting’ part of it. It is not worthy of being talked about. It only shows how bloated and fragile the egos of these male stars and their yes-men are. It also effectively reveals to the world, the existence of the all too familiar green-eyed monster that resides in their respective bosoms.
I am not denying that there is an underlying truth that less clothes on women means more views by men (and it would be better if they ask themselves the reason for it). Yes, that happens. Men want to see nude women. But HOW is that something to mock the female co-stars with? The logic defies me. What about the panting horde that buys tickets and sits drooling to watch them? Why aren’t these megastars and their cronies laughing at them? Aren’t they equally if not more mock-worthy?
Believe me, I am NOT saying there is anything wrong with crowds drooling over half naked women cavorting on the screen. Not at all. They can drool all they want so long as they do not cause a flood. Nor am I saying half-naked women should not cavort on screen or even off it for that matter. It is up to each of these people what they want to do. My point is only (Now pay real close attention to this, for I am sure that at a later point at least one among the commentators is going to overlook that I have already said this and end up pontificating to me. Wanna bet?) why should the ones dancing half naked be ridiculed but not those who pay good money to watch those bodies? You mean to tell me those that dance in a state of undress are sinners and those who sit watching are bleddy saints? Puh-leeease, give me a break.
Our law says dowry givers and dowry takers are equally at fault. Bribe-givers and bribe-takers are also at par. But when it comes to skimpily dressed women on screen and the fully clothed men who rush in to gawk at them, only the women are scorned? Taking off clothes is deplorable, but sitting with your mouth open in front of the screen to watch it is not?
This reminds me of an incident that occurred at the time I was a newbie blogger. A girl (in her early twenties) pleased with having reached the milestone of a ten-thousand hits on her blog page blogged about the fact. Wow, I guess my blogs do have something in them for my viewership to have reached this magic number in such and such time or something of the sort. Along came a fellow blogger (a man on the wrong side of fifty) and left a stinging comment to her post.
“Oh, so YOU think the hits are because of your blogs? Don’t delude yourself. You and other women like you get page hits for the profile pictures you have put up and not for what you write.”
You bet I was incensed. What the hell is that supposed to mean? That female blogger posts their picture to get more views? Oh now she is responsible for those males who visited her page only to look at her face? Don’t male bloggers have their profile picture displayed? Then why should females hide their faces to prove their worth as bloggers? How come this man was not heard chiding/poking fun at the male bloggers for wasting their time writing comments to worthless (if they were so) junk by women? Why had he chosen the girl for his vitriolic attack instead of his male buddies?
I have a suggestion for people like him who think a woman’s profile picture gets her views. Too bad dear fellow. No use going all green with envy. It is indeed sad that you couldn’t be born a woman. Try disguising yourself as one, then get yourself photographed and watch the numbers grow.
I remember another interesting incident. Years back, before the blogging bug bit me, I used to be a member of a music group on Yahoo. Groups (if open) get all sorts of weird mails totally unconnected with what the group is all about. So, mails totally unconnected with music were the norm rather than an exception. One day there was this mail from a supposedly ‘concerned’ brother to all his ‘professed’ sisters, warning them not to post their pictures on the net as the photos might be misused (read morphed).
No prizes for guessing that I was incensed. (Hell, maybe I should have titled this blog “What incenses me”) I sent a reply to the oh-so ‘concerned’ brother stating that perhaps, if he and other such ‘concerned’ brothers were not to give credence to fake photos and instead trusted their sisters, it would make life easier for all. Secondly, what would really help the so-called sisters would be if these ‘concerned’ brothers stopped going in search of ‘such’ doctored photos. Is there anything easier than ‘not looking’? Nope. So what could be better than the brothers sticking to a not-looking policy and wonder of wonders, they would never find any picture, would they? ‘Or perhaps I was asking too much of the ‘concerned’ brothers?’ I asked as a parting shot. Oh I won’t go into what followed, except that I got an avalanche of mails from similar ‘concerned’ brothers who mysteriously shed their concerned brother-hood as far as I was concerned and instead wanted to be ‘fraands’ with me.
The whole world and its aunt not to mention its great grand-daddy and uncle are concerned with the activities of women. Some express it in the form of concern, others poke fun. (Wow that rhymed). Some others let the green-eyed monster slither down from their bosoms where they have been nurturing it, and let it bite them in the seat of their pants. Then are born such observations as these (from here):
“If she has 500 likes and 400 comments in a photo, what’s missing? Her clothes.”
Oh really??!! Like a friend James Carman said, “Because no woman anywhere has ever done anything popular while fully clothed!”?! Yeah absolutely so. As if no woman has ever been popular with clothes on!
But I am curious too.
If a man gets 500 likes and 400 comments it is because… ?
Can you say with certainty it is not because since time immemorial millions of dumb women have been working hard to fill (and refill) fragile egos with hot air so that said egos can remain bloated and afloat? Come to think of it, why is it so hard to accept that the 500 likes and 400 comments a woman gets, with or without clothes when obviously you have your own share tucked safely away? Oh you haven’t got the magic number? Is that the problem? Well well well well….! Don’t let that worm of jealousy grow. Act now. Disrobe and make a try to overtake said woman and declare yourself the winner like a true sportsman. Come on, stop being a petulant child, taking potshots at cloth-less women and in the process degrading innocent women who are popular in spite of having their clothes on.
Sarcasm apart, my answer to ‘What’s missing/’: I find a maximum of 900 people missing something better to do.
I have two more answers to the ‘What’s missing?’ question..
Rashmi: What’s missing? The ability to get past what you see to what it really is.
James Carman: What’s missing? Basic respect for half of humanity.
What do you think is actually missing?

More posts from you and more frequently!
Ha! Ha! Ha!
Jokes apart:
The man who commented cynically on the girl achieving 10000 hits was obviously jealous.
Best ignored.
I love many blogs written by women and am attracted only by the quality of the writing, never by how they look. In any case I don’t know how most my favourite lady bloggers look like and how old they are and am not interested in finding out.
A pretty face may attract a new reader the first time.
It can’t keep them from coming again and again unless she writes well.
Your point regarding the unfairness of faulting actresses for exposing is well taken.
When men flock to watch, they have no business to criticize the actress.
Your experience with that particular Yahoo group was probably because it was an un-moderated group.
I am a member of several groups like this and we are free from this menace. All posts are screened by a group of members who have volunteered some of their time. These volunteer members are from India, USA, UK and Australia and so there is someone to monitor round the clock.

GV
Lol GV, it has been a busy few days for me. Not to mention the Luci-breaks I have to take frequently.
Yes, the fellow was obviously immature and jealous to boot. He picked on most bloggers who were popular. And let me confess, I too came under his radar and attack at a later stage. 😛 5 years back, he was of the opinion that people like me start with a bang but would eventually fizzle out in the blogging scene with nothing more to write. And this was from someone who copied portions from religious discourses and posted them as blogs.
I agree, for readers to be back, you need more than a pretty face. And yes, the Yahoo group was un-moderated. But I moved onto ones which were better run. But I got my share of cheeky joy in writing that mail to the group. 😉
What’s missing? The ability to see that, by passing/enjoying such comments, they are coming across as total dumbheads to anyone with an ounce of common sense.
Dumbheads describes them to a T!
What is missing .. If you ask me basic decency and intelligence in our society. Why are we not intelligent enough to realize that the root cause of crime against women lies in the morphed thoughts and mentality of men and not in the way women dress. Instead of stopping people from celebrating valentines day or banning women from discos/dictating them what to wear, for a change why don’t our political groups try their hand at beating up the men who ogle at women or try to inculcate some basic decency in these men !
Now theres an Idea I really like… women(cause I dont think men would) should form a group, and then go from place to place beating up men who ogle at women, or cop a feel, or make wolf calls or talk nonsense about women (freedom of speech can go to purgatory) etc.
Sigh, I am tempted Mysoul. But when you read the TOI comment section you can hear the whining even without any of these. Talk about sense of entitlement and the whining that goes with it! A stronger sex did anyone say? Prove it through your behavior,, I say.
Sometimes I am not sure whether we are going forwards or are being pulled backwards. 😦 It is like that puzzle: ‘the frog jumps three steps up and then slips back a couple. So how long will it take to reach the top?’
Not for days or months or years, for CENTURIES the same song has been sung and has still got no results. But still no one wants to change the tune or the song!
The gumption, the audacity, the sheer thick headedness of them all! There is so much that men are jealous of, and so they slam women, literally and otherwise. Trust those “men” to hit below the belt, for their think with that region of theirs!!!!!!!
There are remarks I’ve heard during the course of my work, where some (men, of course) in a bank where I was said, Oh! If you wrap a saree around a stick you’re sure to get more accounts or deposits. As if that was all there is to it!
Terribly demeaning. All of it! What’s missing? Being a man, in the true sense of the word 🙂
Maybe nowadays they might say “unwrap”!
And prey why are they blaming the women for the tendency of men to run after even a stick wrapped in a sari? Men are supposed to be logical. Just WHERE is logic in this? They run and they blame others, as if the running is something involuntary that happens..
Now THAT is what has never been taught a sizable number of men, that it is indeed in their very hands and within their power to stop running after anything in a skirt or a sari. If they do, they cannot put the responsibility on the women.
I will be updating the blog with all the answers I have got 🙂
It’s the assumption that any success women achieve is solely due to their external appearance. That is the first assumption. It’s probably based on insecurity by people who don’t want to accept that women can compete with men on equal terms.
I do feel a lot of men who are pampered by society/family are really insecure. To rise above the cossetting and be able to see women and their achievements as a normal part of life needs some gumption, which the majority do not have. It is time society stops its pre-occupation with girls (controlling them) and take a look at their boys who are in dire need of some lessons to face life. When men stop feeling insecure, it benefits women and society as a whole in the long run, don’t you think?.
hmmm I dont know what to say on this..
i guess i need to change my blog pic to get more likes , 400 likes I rarely get 10 hmm now i know what i missing from my blog.
people assume a lot of things and usually the assumption is wrong about others , they are themselves not tht good so to hide the fact they try to put it the other way round .. thats how i feel
Yeah Bikram change your profile pic! 😉 maybe you will get the 500 likes. Jokes apart, I think it is the same men who ‘like’ the picture of women who later speak condescendingly of how many hits it has. Only the one who clicked knows just why he clicked it! 🙂 And he thinks everyone else clicked for the same reason too!
good one Shail 🙂
really … the indignation …. the men sure has ego issues …
they don’t get it into their skull that their movies becomes hits because of women
show how much their acting is worth 🙂
i recently watched this hindi movie called “The Dirty Picture”
Vidya Balan was great on that movie.
The movie covers that concept so well.
Such a pity you know… It is a good movie, and she had put a wonderful performance.. But all people did was stare at her
Thank you Amira. Is this your first comment here? If so welcome to Shail’s Nest 🙂
A curious thing. I remember my mother telling me that of the two versions of a song in some movies, how the one in the male voice is always be better. I BELIEVED that for a long long long time till one day I questioned myself why songs in male voices should be considered superior? Unknowingly thins are planted in our minds and unless we learnt to question, we pass it on to our progeny. What a neat trick! The importance of heroes in any movie is also on similar lines. A hero ‘carries’ a movie on his shoulders. Oh really? But sadly that is imprinted so strongly in all minds.
Whats missing? A sensible, sane mind which is free of such stupid, dumb, demeaning thoughts. I pity such narrow-heads!
I wish such people are ridiculed as narrow-heads by all. May be that would get to them eventually!
I will update the post with your answer too 🙂
ROTFL… The one thing I have noticed is that the so called commentors are also pretty worked up when the better behaved (read better reared) of their gender get more attention from the other gender.
Jealousy and cheap mindsets will always exist.. The best we can do is ignore them or even better block them wherever we can.
Oh, just to add, Salman takes off his shirt for the very same hits, even men drool when Sly Stallone gets into training mode.
Oh the current pic I have on display, has me shirtless 😀 Now lets see the page hits coming..
Point! Isn’t that the green-eyed monster at work? Btw, where is this shirtless picture of yours? Maybe I should keep an eye on the page hits/comments! 😛
LOL, i meant the Calvin pic tat you see right here 😀
Dont know if its that or all the awards. My hits are growing brilliantly. 😀
Hahhahaha!
that guy ACTUALLY Wrote that at the 10000 views thing….I mean how stupid can he get…
and the story about the mallu actors…How can people get so cheap..no seriously…like you said, its not my business if naked women are liked by the masses..but passing such statements is totally uncalled for and idiotic!!
Yes he wrote that and the girl was trying ot be respectful in her reply as he was considered a respected elder. THIS is respect worthy behavior from a supposed elder? I made a point to go appreciate her and refute his comment. I ended up getting into his bad books! 😆
And the movie thing had me so annoyed when I read it! These same people who make these stupid comments will spend time watching the same female-actors in real and reel life.
/ What’s missing? Basic respect for half of humanity./ That said it for me!
Posts such as the one you shared here are all the rage these days on facebook, and the worst part is, nobody seems to mind!! The amount of misogynistic nonsense doing the rounds on these social networks is mind-boggling –and alarming.
Welcome to Shail’s Nest Scribblehappy. Yes, James Carman’s response speaks for me too. I also am seeing such posts doing the rounds and all the ‘likes’ and accolades they are getting. ‘Misogynistic nonsense’ says it. I don’t hesitate to puncture some of the hot air filled comments at times.
What’s missing?….Mutual respect! I am saddened that we still live in a world where men and woman are looked at so differently and worse yet, treated differently! I have a young daughter and tell her everyday that she can do and BE whatever she wants to be in this world.
Sometimes I believe the true reason men keep us “down” with their innuendo and control is simply FEAR!
Welcome to Shail’s Nest Poetry road. For years I have been contemplating on just why we women are feared by men. (That they fear us is a conclusion I have concluded too, like you say.) What power do we have that we are so ruthlessly kept in check by society? Are we being kept ignorant of our own power?
As it is science says, “The X chromosome has about 1200 to 1500 genes . Guess how many genes does the Y have ? Only 100 , and the number is going down” It is from the book ‘Brain Rules’ Read this blog here: http://kislaychandra.blogspot.in/search/label/Science

Thank you. I would like to ask these ‘concerned’ brothers just HOW they find these pictures? I am sure they have not been recruited by the police or even the sisters for this “social service”!
What’s missing? I liked your answer, somebody having something better to do is missing.
🙂
Your blog doesn’t seem to show on my WordPress Reader!
WordPress Reader?
Yeah, see here, http://wordpress.com/#!/read/
Oh that? I wonder why. All your blogs show up for me!
I have one more issue with all this. What’s wrong with men drooling as described by you is not that they drool but that they disrespect those who they drool over. If they drooled like they drool over Angelina Jolie or Jenifer Lopez – it would be fine. Acknowledge that the women are beautiful, very attractive, very droolworthy and also very unlikely to acknowledge their existence. Fine, it happens. If they are also good actors, singer, nerdy, smart networkers, have great PR skills etc, Great. Acknowledge that also, but if they are none of all these other things but still are very drool worthy, then why shouldn’t they still be respected for their bring drool worthy.
A-B-S-O-L-U-T-E-L-Y.
If drooling is acceptable activity, then the objects of drooling should be too, even if their job is simply catering to the droolers. (I made up that word)
Droolers can drool all they want, as long as they clean up after themselves and do not mess with the Droolee(thats my name for the object that brings about the drooling in the droolers 😛 )
Lol, good name! And I agree 🙂
I love the way you structure arguments and I fully agree with your views. Having said that I wish I could see more stories from you as well.
Perhaps you missed some of them I posted here? 🙂
Did I? Thought so. Often I tend to skip your feminist pieces as I am already fully bought in on the feminist view point. Must have lost the stories amidst them. Will look over.
Lol, okay. Actually they are quickies I do for the 3WW prompt words. 🙂
Did you also notice that the ages of the women actors is inversely proportional to the ages of the ‘veteran’ male actors in south Indian movies? Sometimes the number of ‘heroines’ also increases with the hero’s age. The heroines in Rajinikanth’s movies are only getting younger. Deepika Padukone? Really?? The number of heroines in Satyaraj’s movies are anywhere between 2 to 5. If they were really secure about their acting skills, why cast younger skimpily clad women? Telll me, I say 😀
Whats missing – Brains 🙂
