Today I am going out with my women friends. Not anywhere far, just for lunch at a place not far off and a movie afterwards. There’s going to be lots of chatter as always happens when women friends meet up, not to mention the hugs and the customary pulling of legs of each other in a goodnatured way.
I know I am going to enjoy it.
What I am not sure of is the movie. You see, I am very picky and choosy when it comes to movies. I am not sure if I needed to use both picky and choosy, but I have gone ahead and done so to show just where I stand when it comes to enjoying movies—somewhere far apart from the rest of the population.
Don’t get me wrong. I am not a film critic, or an expert on the making of it. But I know what I enjoy, and it’s definitely not everything that is shown on the screen in the name of entertainment. Most people are generously forgiving of every incongruousness shown on the big—or small—screen.
Not me, I am afraid.
If there is no logic in the story, if the characters behave erratically for no reason, if the story jumps from one premise to another without so much as by your leave, if characters spout meaningless stuff passed off as profound—believe me, they do!—my bullshit antennae picks it all up and I mentally scoff at the writer, director, editor, in fact the whole team who watched it before inflicting it on the public.
There is one other thing that puts me off movies. It is the way women characters are written. It is also the way women characters are treated by the male characters in the movie. Well, movies are a reflection of the society we live in, I agree. That doesn’t mean you glorify women being mistreated or objectified. No Siree, no.
Well, I am not judging the movie before I have even seen it. It’s supposed to be a light comedy. And watching it with friends is what matters right now. So I will reserve my judgement on it till after, and maybe write an even longer post about it. Or not write at all. It all depends on whether it stirs the hornets nest—that is, my sense and sensibility.
Keeping my fingers crossed! 😉
