The word cobblestone comes from the English word ‘cob’ meaning something of a rounded shape. Cobblestones are thus rounded water-worn stones used to pave streets, initially set in sand and later mortar.

To me cobblestone paths equate to Europe, Rome especially. May be it is some of the movies I have seen of Romans galloping on horses, down cobbled streets. Apparently though, cobbled streets predate even Romans, to more ancient times, with cobblestones used widely all over the world to pave roads.

Cobblestone streets have an old world charm that tugs at your heart. Well, it tugs at mine. In Belgrade I got the opportunity to walk cobblestone paved paths to my heart’s content. Well, not entirely true since my heart longs to walk them some more. But for the time being at least I am content. 😉

These are my dream ways dear friend! I am walking over there through your beautifull snapshots!
Thank you!
Ah, you’ll find cobblestones all over Europe – including England of course. They have made a comeback in recent decades and you’ll find them in every town and city as well as not a few villages. When I think of cobblestones, I think of Yorkshire, Hovis bread and the inevitable soundtrack of Dvorak’s New World Symphony!
I will have to listen to that now!!
