I can’t help it. When I hear the word ‘understanding’ the first picture that comes to mind is that of a man drenched to the core, standing on the ground-floor, chastising the mischief-makers on top who emptied a bucket of water on him and warning them off in no uncertain terms to not do it again as otherwise, ‘understanding people will suffer’. Confused? Understanding here stands for ‘under’ standing aka those standing underneath/below.
Yes, it is one of those jokes that make fun of people who aren’t proficient in English and has been around for a long, long time. You can be sure though that the ones who relate it to you will swear that it happened in their school/college and was said by this teacher or that priest who had been the headmaster or principal while they were a student at the institution and of course, in their hearing. Nothing but hogwash. The truth probably is some wisecrack made up the joke and people left, right and center are now busy laying claim to it.
Understanding is a beautiful word which means the ability to understand, comprehension, sympathetic, awareness or tolerance and more. I will now ask you to be understanding of my abrupt departure to make hay while the sun shines (it is actually cloudy here!) and do some window-shopping 😀
In the meantime, if you’d like you can check out this old post of mine: Understanding misunderstandings.

oh my god! really.. may be I was under standing to avoid them pooping on me 😀
Haha! 😛
The things that inspire Shail are amazing
Into the ordinary, she can bring a zing
She takes a firm stand
On the word ‘understand’
Even on Treepies on wires a-buzzing!
Your photo made me laugh! Also, I never thought about it, but you don’t really see birds with bird poop on them, so they must have a unique understanding. 😉
Haha, Looks like they have, indeed! 😀
Never thought about it myself!
I had never heard that before. It cracked me up.
😀
I love it when someone points something out that is so obvious, but which I’ve missed all my life – perhaps through familiarity, or perhaps an inability to stand back and think outside the box! I’ll never think of “understanding” quite the same again.
Thankfully, I’d swallowed my sip of water and put my glass down before I clicked on your link – otherwise, my screen would now be decidedly damp! That picture totally cracked me up, and I love your explanation behind it. Hope you had fun window shopping!
