If you notice, I have two new badges in the top right-hand corner of my page. The copyright one is familiar to most of you. Perhaps the one below is not yet. Enough is enough. I have now joined the Bloggers Against Plagiarism drive. It is the need of the hour. Just what the doctor ordered.
Let me confess. I am a compulsive blog-hopper. In real life you will not see me hop skip or jump. Oh no siree, never, the little (old) lady that I am. On the other hand, in real life, I do run rather than walk at a sedate pace that becomes my age, making me get all out of breath and have the Lord & Master roll his eyes and switch to his ‘when will she ever learn‘ expression. Be that as it may (Digression my bane!!), all I wanted to convey was that when it comes to virtual life, I hop, skip and jump and how!
So there I was one day, indulging in my favorite past time of virtual hop skip and jump from blog page to blog page, putting to shame the friskiest of lambs in spring time. Just as the frisky lamb would pause on chancing upon some fresh green grass worth nibbling to proceed and nibble to its hearts content, moi would pause at some interesting blog and proceed to nibble, errrr….. I mean read. While so pleasantly engaged, one fine day a couple of weeks back, I got quite an unpleasant shock. In one of the blog pages, I found laid out in all its glory for all it was worth, the exact sentences that I had racked my brains, to come up with.
Hmmmm… I took a second look and also a third, as if I needed a second or third look to recognize my own work. I went back to my page opened the particular blog in question and checked. Oh yeah, it was the same. It is not as it I couldn’t recognize the sentences I insisted my dancing gray cells to come up with. But then I am a stickler for details such as these. I then checked the antecedents of the blogger in question. Seemed to be a genuine and respected blogger. Many of my respected blogger friends were there applauding the efforts put into that fine blog. But the fact remained that the blogger had copied parts from my post without permission, without acknowledging or linking back to my page.
It is alright for the Spiritually Advanced to say, do your work and leave the rest to the Unknown. What nonsense!! I did not sit up, think and type out my thoughts so that some Photostatting Machine or Collector Copier (Those who read a 100 or so blogs on the topic and instead of writing what their own view is, lift sentences and paragraphs off from the blogs they have read and present it as their own. This particular blog was of a Collector Copier) can come along and take the credit! I have read my internet laws. I know that anything I post at my site is mine and no one can copy it without permission or without linking back to this page. But what did I do about it?? I merely fretted and fumed for a few days and gave up not knowing what to do.
A few months back I had had another experience. My post was copied almost word for word with just a twist here and there by a ‘friend’ and posted with a disclaimer to boot. Of course it was under the guise of good clean ‘fun’!! What is ‘clean’ fun about copying someone’s post without acknowledging the source is beyond me. I am sorry to say I did not find it the least bit funny. As most of my friends are aware, I do take keen interest in presenting my posts, even the ‘tags’ (which I don’t care much about but is an intrinsic part of blog-world), in my own style. I spend time and effort over what I do, like most all of you, grabbing and making use of the free time in between busy schedules. Catch me being amused to find someone has come along, opted for the easy way out, copied my post and given it his/her signature without so much as by your leave!
I have not yet reached that state of spiritual advancement where I can say with total conviction, what is mine is yours. Certainly not. What is mine is mine!! And I am damned if you think you can get away with copying from it partly or fully. When I do reach that higher level of spirituality, I promise to make an announcement and all the Photostatting Machines and the Collector Copiers of the blog-world can make a beeline for my page and grab what you can from my page. Till then, no chance baby! Right now, I am possessive about my work and I certainly don’t intend sharing.
Look what I found on one of my blog hopping jaunts. This and this. Bloggers uniting against plagiarism and helping each other fight against it. Yeah, this is more like it. I was silent earlier. Now I am not going to make the same mistake. So you out there who think you can copy what I have written and take all the credit for your bally self, think again!! I will not go down without fighting the next time. I am with Bloggers Against Plagiarism.

Today is my friend’s birthday. Hi there, Penguin from Antarctica! A Very Happy Birthday to You!! Smile… Always!
~ your friend.

How absurd is that!I wonder why you didnt raise any objections the first time you came across such plagiarisms. Anyway better late than never, isnt it!!
I’m sure you’ll be blog-hopping even more fiercely now…who knows what you may find..LOL!
Deeps, I am a very slow in reacting to things. The only time in my life I reacted promptly was when this happened.
I thought the “page protected by copyright” thingie works! it doesn’t?
Nothing is gonna deter the copycats I guess, Ganga. They think no one will find them out. Or like in the one I found, the person has skillfully integrated my sentences into her post.
Yes, I totally agree. Has happened with me too.
BTW, did anyone ever comment at your blog when in Ooty?! See, that is how much I love it :))
Rhett, did someone copy your poems??!! At least, I have not found anything of the sort yet. That’s when I am going to scream blue murder. Once i found a couple of my poems at a site. But the person had duly put my name to it, indicating it was not his own. Yeah there ARE honest people around.
Oh were you in Ooty?? 🙂 Thank you!! 🙂 I liked your take on the power-cut and the ‘light aa gayi bit’ though I haven’t got around to commenting on it yet!
Mee too… 🙂 Found it today at Solilo’s blog, went across to th YU space and got myself one of those 🙂
I have had a similar experience on an Orkut Poetry community! One of my writes, copy pasted with no acknowledgement! I raised alarm, and since out there, the readers are posting comments real time, the whole thing went on for about 10 minutes… all the members posting notes about how this is just not done, and all.. and that person who actually did it, had the temerity to say, Oh, I thought I could just past a poem here.. Grrrr!!!!
Well that is done! But for you to have had that experience repeated is nasty! Hopefully this badge will help!
Loved your story of blog hopping 🙂 And grazing.. :D!
Good that you got one too Usha. You already have faced a similar situation! My first experience was at another site of mine. I had gone to so much effort to do a tag, presenting it uniquely with pictures and all. Then along comes this ‘friend’ and just copies the whole thing with a twist here and there and a different set of pictures and a disclaimer!! No link either, claims it was for fun. Now how funny is that?? Actually at the time I didn’t know what to do and I just let it go. I thought if I object I might be branded petty. Sigh!
You’ve been tagged again, Shail.. Of course, you may do it whenever, or simply enjoy the posts of all who have 🙂
Lol Usha. Yeah sure. I will check it out. I am swamped under a mountain of tags and am wondering where to start. Of course no option but to start at the beginning! 😉
there are bad seeds everywhere and blogosphere is no exception..2 years back even I had a similar experience when a blog about my 1st voting experience was copied by another guy and presented it as his own..the pain I felt when one of my friends pointed out that blog to me is just unexplainable..And wen I asked that guy for an explanation, he gave me a gr8 one-“I just wrote what I felt in my heart”. He must thank heavens that I dint find his home and beat him up..anyway he removed the post that day itself and is now a blogger of repute ..
There are many such cases which can go un noticed..even u noticed this only after some blog hopping..So with a group effort and awareness on this malice, we may be able to atleast reduce such occurence, if not completely wipe out
Copying another’s effort and saying they wrote what they felt in their heart!! OMG, its the pits!! Yeah I know, there maybe lots of cases going unnoticed. I once read a comment in a friend’s blog from a good Samaritan that he had read the same story at ibibo under a different name. He had even provided the link. I checked it out and sure enough there was the friend’s story word for word posted by some one else!! The only difference was he/she had made an effort to correct the typos in the original story!! I don’t know what he did about it though. Hope the group effort will give some result. Thanks Praveen.
Shail, Why didn’t you immediately write about the copycat? I remember last year or so a food blogger raised voice against a website copying recipes and then it reached upto personal level with them threatening her and finding her personal whereabouts and they even put her name and links on a porn website :(. It was sad for her but she continued to fight and many bloggers joined her.
It think in March 2007 there was another campaign against yahoo for copying some blogger stuff too.
Next time one of us find a copycat, ask them politely next blog about them and shame them.
Well, Solilo like I mentioned in a comment above, I give things a lot of thought before I do anything about it. Sometimes it is too late by then. Of course I left a comment there saying I found the blog contained material from my post. I even left a link back to my post. I guess I am more possessive about my poems and stories. And no one actually can get away with copying my posts under the tag ‘memoirs’ as they are from my life. But I gave this a lot of thought since this was a general topic and the argument could go on endlessly. Ahh well, anyway I know what to do the next time!!
I never thought much about these things. I never considered my stuff copy-worthy enough. But now that you mention it, is there any way we can actually stop these things from happening? What is the copycats beware icon you have there? Does that help? How do you get one of those? Let me know…
Roopa, your stuff not copy worthy??!! :O You can get one of both by following the link in my post. Do go and read both the posts. It is bloggers helping each other to fight against plagiarism and blatant copying.
Why didn’t you name and shame???
Sigh! I just didn’t Rakesh. I won’t stop from naming the next time though.
Shail, my posts don’t have much literary value, so I have never had this problem.
I’m surprised that the person copying another’s material to spruce up his/her blog can sleep at night, not having a clear conscience. Too bad you had to have such a bad experience. No wonder you’re upset!
Well, Manju, I have come across two now with no acknowledgement. I did find a third place with my poems. But that person seemed to be collecting poems he liked and had my name written beneath the poems. I just chanced upon it many months back.
If you are writing on a topic and are drawing from other blogs, isn’t it fair to mention the source and link to it?? Conscience it seems is absconding!
Shail,
I thought it would be impossible to copy and pass it on as original in this Google era.
Probably you should direct such people to a place where they can get away with plagiarism and even make some money in the whole deal – moviedom!
Keep writing. Don’t let anything dampen your spirits!
Cheers,
Sal
Sal, you are right. Moviedom is the place for them. Maybe they are practicing to get into that field??!! Ahh it will take some dampening to douse this spirit!! 😀 Thanks!!
Thanks for joining the movement 🙂
Thanks for dropping by Chirag. Good to know of bloggers supporting each other.
Shail: Bring that imposter out on your blog. As you said its okay if he had put in a reference back to your blog but copying sentences altogether is the limit.
Keep blogging!
Thanks Biju. I shall in the future.
I am sure that it’s not me who did that! Cuz I don’t blog at all. Dunno if I would even start 😛 Okie jokes apart! At least they shld feel ashamed now (I hope they would read this) and shouldn’t repeat anymore!
Keep blogging as always! Al though I can’t write (the way you write) the things that are in my heart… I feel nice sometimes when I see my thoughts and feelings through your blog 🙂 (((((hugs)))))
Thanks da Bubbly. And if it were you I’d have you by your ear and ask, “Ini cheyyo??!” 😀 😛 I wonder what Pranav and Jia will say to that!! ROTFLOL. (((((hugs)))))
Like Blogroll may be you can put a title “plagariser” and put the link. and from my part i will go and knock at her door. we actually did that vinod sharma ( india retold)’s blog was plagarised. and it worked..
anrosh
Anrosh, that’s a good idea. Shall keep that in mind for the next time (hoping there won’t be a next time though!) Thanks.
Shail,it is a shame!!
just put a comment on the page of the plagiator to say the text is yours!!!he is a theft, robber !
I did leave a comment Isabel, saying that the person had used material from my post. Yes it is a shame.
😀 😀 😀 thanks for putting the badge up and reacting 😛
That’s ok if you haven’t come arnd that. I too don’t come arnd commenting on a lot many posts, yours for eg 😛 kidding.
But am glad yu read such longish writings by moi.
OMG they aren’t long posts, not compared to mine Rhett!! 😉
hehe mumma… u have every right to do that 😀 And Pranav & Jia would laugh at me and say ‘Shame shame mumma shame’ 😛
😛
that would have felt terrible shail – i truly empathise. But on a lighter note u know they say imitation is the best form of flattery so down right copying is akin to worship i guess 😉
This is more like copying Arch. I know, imitation is the best form of flattery. I have a post to write on that!! 😉 But I can tell you I was not at all ‘flattered’ by the ‘imitating’ ways of this particular lady!! *rolls eyes in exasperation at the memory*
Gosh, I didn’t realise plagiarism was rampant in the blogosphere..Somehow, I assumed there must be the odd frustrated soul here and there who might copy just so that they can bask in the shadow of another. Never thought of it as a serious issue..maybe because like Roopa, I wouldn’t do it and don’t think of my matter as copy-able. Stupid of me, I guess. Because this is not good, esp for writers of substance like you…
I am glad you have reacted….
I wish you had provided links to the offender just so that we could have gone there to say a resounding Shame on you!!!.
Shail, there is nothing wrong in being possessive about your work..I mean, each of your posts has a little bit of you in it and it is very natural for you to feel outraged when someone blatantly copies without as much as a word to you!!!
http://www.3madmoggies.blogspot.com
Well Rekha, it looks like it is rampant. You are right, each post contains a little bit of us in it and when you see it in someone else’s page passed off as their own, you bristle. I bristled anyway. I googled my name one day and found a page with my poetry in it but it had been credited to me. Though one of the incidents had been a really stupid way of getting back at me, the other post had been a synthesis of several bloggers’ posts and I recognized what had been filched from my post right away. And I got there just because I blog- hop a lot!! There might be others which I know nothing of.
i was thinking about this the other day … how do u know if ur work is copied though :// u can never tell right
Well I didn’t get you Roop. Why would you NOT know its your work?? When the exact sentences you wrote are right there for me to see, why ever would I not know??!! If you are implying two people can have the same ideas and write about it, I agree. But that two people should write on the same ideas using the same words, sentences exact replicas of each other…well, well well….. that IS a tall order isn’t it?? I do believe in coincidences, but not to this extent.
BTW welcome to my page.
Do I know the copy cat?? I feel so sad NO ONE ever copies my blogs…they arent worth it…lol..Indeed its irritating to say the least when one finds his/her hard work lifted with ease. Thanks for the Birthday wishes…or should I say “Quack Quack”…(um is that the way penguins speak..must see Batman again.)
You do Vivek. Since you are feeling so sad that ‘NO ONE ever copies your work,’ shall I ask them to do that??!! 😛
You are welcome Penguin from Antarctica. “Quack Quack”
OMG now you have me going quack quack!! :O
I have written two coments on this, and as far as I can tell, well I can’t tell. Where have they gone?
Good job on speaking up for an important issue. How miserable it must be for people with no ideas of their own or the imagination to create. I won’t repeat any observations from my other two comments in case they unexpectedly show up.
That good writing is so much effort, that it is much rewriting and time dense, and that it is caring about language, ideas, and fellow human beings seems not to occure to Idea Thieves, no?
Aagain, excellent job, Shail.
How miserable it must be for someone who thinks that “comments” is spelled “coments? 🙂
arghhhh…..Aagain!
Good to highlight this one ! My works have never been copied [nothing worth copying, I guess ;)] but my photos. I had a terrible time in Orkut itself. Someone thought my photo was lifted off the Net and felt free to post it in their own album. Therefore I sign my photos and put the date as well.
Its difficult to keep a track of copycats. So I did what I could … I limited access to my old Blog.
I usually do not comment on blog posts but I found this quite interesting, so here goes. Thanks! Regards, P.
Had a similar experience and this time it was photographs and writings. I was so pissed that I send a mail and a reply came which was shocking ! – he accused me of being petty and ridiculous !!! And sadly being just an amateur writer and photographer I didnt have a copyright to prove anything!
Now I’m paranoid of everything online. Nice read this one !!
Me: I am not surprised. First they copy and then accuse of pettiness. How mean, isn’t it??
Thanks for dropping in and leaving a comment.
