Accept a simple fund transfer to my account, that’s all I asked of the stupid bank. But when the sender tries transferring the money, the bank’s database spits out the message: “The payee name you entered does not match with the name present in our bank records. Please be sure before you proceed.”
Of course the sender is sure, He, unlike the bank, is not a moron. He knows my name and has typed it correctly. With this message popping up in his face, he has checked and even double checked. But to no avail. There apparently is no one by my name in their records. Helpless, he sends me a mail with an accompanying page print.
How can that be, I put the question to the Lord and Master when he returned home. Is not ours a joint account?? Or has the bank forgotten to add my name??
The next day, a phone call reveals that yes, it IS a joint account and my name does exist in their records. Then what is the problem?? God alone knows, because the minions at the bank don’t seem to. What is the advice meted out?? The receiver (me) can please tell the sender, who then has to tell his local branch, who in case of any clarification needed can contact the local branch here, who will then say that they have approved the matter of the receiver receiving money.
Oh really?? How exciting and extremely easy and quick work all this looks! A veritable communication adventure.
Pardon me, when I opened an account with you (and you were supposed to do all your checking and approval sessions prior to opening that account for me) dear bank, my intention was not to twiddle my thumbs and let it remain idle, for your kind info. Bizarre as it may seem to you, I definitely had plans of using my account. Receiving and transferring funds was part of that plan too. Does that seem somewhat out of the ordinary to you, something no one does perhaps??!!
What I cannot believe is, now that your Lordships have approved that I am fit to receive money via fund transfer, you think it is MY job to do all the running around for the goof up on your side, eh?? !!!!!!!! Excuse me. You seriously don’t expect me to go the I tell him, he tells them and they tell yet another someone routine, do you?? The way you outline things, it will be much easier (and faster) for the sender to just walk into the nearest post office and send me a Money Order! Going back to the dark ages, are we?? Do I need your services for that??
I am damned if I do business with you in the future unless and until you pull your act together. I opted for net banking to get things done with a click, not spend time opening and maintaining communication channels inter-state. If there is something wrong with your database, the least you can do is buck up, rectify it and update it as also DO SOMETHING to get the transfer of funds done.
Of course an apology would be in order first. Imagine opening an account and a month later being told your name does not figure in the bank’s records by the damn thing you call your internet database while it does hold the name of the other holder, the L & M. If I did not know better I would accuse you of gender inequality. Adding insult to injury is the fact that you say the problem might be because the initials in my signature differ from that of my name on record. OMG, you really must think I am some dumbo to swallow that. Pray tell me, what does the letter that makes up my initial in my signature have to do with my name being or not being in your records??!!! And when you yourselves confirm that my name has been spelt correctly, how does my signature matter??!!
For your info, dear bank, I just called my other bank and they gave me explicit instructions to transfer that fund in minutes, even though it is not from a branch of their own bank. If that doesn’t work, there is always the option to avail the facilities at the Post Office, but certainly not at your stupid branch. Tchah.

Hey, it happened with me as well. ICICI Bank . 😀 Seriously , what is the point of Net banking if you have to do so much, might as well, get the cash changed into coins , and start throwing in the direction of receiver in patterns of 1’s and 0’s 😀

Do you know banks send a minor account holder a letter telling them that since they have turned 18, they should have their account changed to a ‘major’ one. And in the same breath, rather same letter, they ask them to get their birth certificate to prove age. How did they know what age they were to send a letter?? And what do they need new birth certificate for when one is already there with them?? I find it too funny. Whenever I have pointed this out to the minions, they smile weakly and say, “That’s how it is done’ 😆

i can understand the rant coming now ..,. and ICICI bank is such a stupid bank i get a email comign every now and then to open a account nri thingy etc, i did open it but when you actually need the money they create so many hurdles ..
I put the money for my india visit and then when i reched they wanted me to come to the branch to sign, do this , passport copy this and that blah blah blah
and when i was to withdraw money i had to fill some other forms , get two witnesses.. ridiculous
so now i have 0.00 in there account, its safer to pay by credit card and then pay off the card..

Most probably, the person who enterted your details in the database would have mis-spelt your name. Happens, you know. And the banking operation is not all what the sales people and the advertisements show you. The people behind the computers actually curse the sales people to bring in more work to them.
I think you would need to walk into the bank and sit with the person to correct your name.
Shail said:
@Sreejith,
Hmm…. But the bank says my name is correctly spelt! One can understand glitches happening. It is their explanations and cover ups that irritates. The least they can do is show some initiative in solving problems. The initiative seems only for opening accounts!

ha! icicicicic…errr no i don’t see actually. everytime i visited their foul branch, i had to sit around for hours waiting for my token number to be called. and then the lady with the lipstick would tell me in many many many words she does not know what to do with my problem. i used to tell in three words what they can do with themselves. they mucked up my demat account so badly. one fellow mumbled about a spelling mistik (sic) in my name in different ‘databases’ and so something something mumble mumble. i said okay…so correct it. ‘no database is in mumbai’. ‘what do you mean database is in mumbai? do you know what a database is?’ i ask. my voice is ringing all over the three floors. then manager-type comes trotting asking about the problem. so the rat of a clerk explains something. then manager says its an irreversible error. so i tell him i know i look a bit dense, but i’m not. all he needs to do is to get hold of someone with admin rights, pull up my record and correct the damn spelling. i can give a request in writing. manager shakes head. no no no not possible. okay then delete the record and create a new one. no no no not possible. he said something about my name being listed in sebi database and its not possible. so is this database called ‘loser’s database’ I ask. perhaps sebi is tracking all of us who open a demat account with 0 shares for years. manager-type repeats ‘not possible’. he has gone into shock i think. close-encounters-of-third-kind feeling we share. okay. so i am your customer. and you have screwed up. so how do you, as a manager, intend rectifying the situation. sorry mumble mumble mumble. these are the times when i wish for liberal gun control. of course i no longer bank with them. if it comes to that, like Stephen Leacock, I’d rather put my savings in a sock. in fact, i think a sock is really more than enough.

How did you discover that we are discussing about you here. U guys are using something like google blog search feed to get these updates about who’s talking what about ICICI in the blogosphere? And, and .. please don’t mind.. I am just curious, why would someone spend his/her time, trying to “reach out” to the “fall outs” of ICICI, if not for some incentive? Oh yeah.. is it that the referral number to be mentioned on the subject of the mail being sent to care@icicibank.com is a “count = count++” code that adds up your credits due for some incentive? If that’s the idea, its commendable innovation I would say? And if this is an “outsourced” job.. we Indians are really demonstrating something unprecedented. However, I just wish, there be good internal coordination within the organization, and not that you just handle the part of collecting the complains very well, but not one to really address them. We customers need to see more than just assurances and polished words. Actions speak louder than words. 🙂

When I tried transferring cash with a name mismatch, they tried warning me too. I found it to be a cool feature. In fact that was my bad spelling..!! What if there was a serious error in the account number?
Nevertheless, i crosschecked the number clicked ok and then the money was transfered! No idea why it failed in your case! And I am happy with ICICI bank. Their website is in my experience better than SBI’s and far far better than Federal Bank’s. Mobile application through which I use their mobile banking facilities is also awesome!!
NB: I don’t work with ICICI!!
Shail said:
@Jithin V Mohan,
Good that you clarified that you aren’t working for ICICI 🙂 Transferring funds is a cool feature and I have been using it for years now. I have had absolutely no problems using this feature with other banks to-date. But hitches can happen anywhere, anytime. That is acceptable to a degree. The point here is the way the bank responds to you when you have a problem. 🙂
Shail said:
@Jithin V Mohan,
Errr… Did you mean the warning is a cool feature or transferring the funds is?? Either one is, and neither are, new to me. But a bank that gives stupid reasons for such glitches is what takes the cake.
I don’t know either why it didn’t work in my case. That’s why I asked the bank. They did not know either!! 😛 I have a page print, proof that everything had been entered correctly.

Well, I know all these have been posted quite long ago by Shail/Scorpria, but I would like to share my experience too.
ICICI is NOT as bad as Shail/Scorpria are expresing it.
FYI: I am not an ICICI Employee.
I totally agree with Jithin, also I would like to add something more to it. Look, when you are doing a transfer and when the transfer goes to an unintended payee I am pretty sure that you would go to the bank and yell at them, they dont want it to happen neither they want their customers to lose their money, thats the reason they have all those prompts while adding the payee accounts.
Did you ever get to add any of the payees successfully? I am sure you might have successfully added atleast a few without any problems, so what could be the problem when trying to add this account? ask your friend(payee) about his correct A/C number, correct name in the bank records, and try again.
You know what….even I am having the same problem, I am unable to add a payees account, its popping out the same prompt “The payee name you entered does not match with the name present in our bank records. Please be sure before you proceed.” I asked my friend to check with his account info (or go to the bank). Will post it here for sure about how was i able to resolve the problem.
So…if you have any problem doing any online banking, dont get so frustated, keep calm and cool, go to the bank if you have some time, or ask the payee to check with his bank A/C details and try again, if you still have problems, go to the bank whenever it is possible and get it resolved rather than criticize a Bank brutally.
Be Good, Do good!!!!

The problem was that my friends name had some spaces in between in the Bank records, and when I corrected it while adding the payee it worked like a charm. I was able to add the payee and transfer the amount successfully.
Cheers!!!!!

Shail said:
@Vik,
Welcome to Shail’s Nest and thank you for the comment which sort of makes me look like a moron and illiterate and someone who is doing fund transfer for the first time in her life. Lol, please un-check all the three.
The first thing anyone with an ounce of brain does is check spelling, account number, branch name and such things. ANYONE knows that if these are not correct money will not be transferred. Elementary. I sent my details to the sender after double, triple checking and checked it again when the problem arose.
Secondly, yes I too am aware that all these safety measures are in place to protect MY (customer’s) money. So I am not finding fault with them, neither have I complained about ‘prompts’. If you read the post again you will notice one important fact: that I did not go and yell at bank employees. I very politely called them, or rather my husband did, and ASKED them what could be wrong and why the fund transfer was not working.
Thirdly, in answer to the query, the said bank employees HAD NO CLUE how things could be rectified. Now why do I say that?? Because, instead of understanding the problem and advising me correctly, they asked me (JUST LIKE YOU) to check if details were correct (I have a print screen of the page) and then (unbelievably so ) they told me to contact the sender and tell his bank branch to call my branch for clarification. Clarification for what? That the sender can put money in my account?? But that was not the problem. Anyway, once you clarify, the email transfer is supposed to work automatically??!!!! Oh really?!! Some people (like you have) might think I am stupid, but I am not such an ignoramus as not to know that there is some other reason and actually the ignoramuses are the bank employees giving me such stupid advice which btw, subsequent events proved conclusively.
Fourthly, can you imagine a bank telling you that the initial in your signature and your name are different that might be the reason there was a hitch? Are they supposed to read my name from my signature or the name entered in their records?
Fifthly, my post is not merely about the problem in transferring money (problems happen and is a part of life) but about bank employees who are ignorant and unable to guide you when you have a problem. Of what use is an account with them when no one can tell you how to solve one??
Lastly, if you have read the comments you will notice that I have mentioned I have ALREADY solved the problem by myself. It is a wonder, real mystery, that the bank was not aware of this simple solution. How could they, they did not even understand the problem!!
P.S. You really thought I would miss something like space between name or things like that and bother to write a blog about it here?? Proves to me some people jump in with their two cents without even reading the post properly! 😛
As for Scorpria, you better go and read her blog before saying anything.
I am not saying all bank branches of this bank are like this. But ANY BANK which acts in this manner I certainly feel needs to take a second look at themselves.

Someone was stupid enough to not notice spaces between names so you ASSUME, I am stupid as well?! Wah re wah! How many times do I have to repeat that I have PROOF (printed) that EVERYTHING entered was correct before you are able to accept it? 😛
Vaibhav K said:
@Shail, can you tell me how you managed to solve the problem yourself? I am facing the same issue in sending money to a friend. She says her details are correct but I always receive the dreaded name does not match account warning! Since the bank employees don’t have a clue I have no where else to look for a solution. Thanks in advance 🙂
shail said:
Is it the same bank? Is your friend a joint account holder? If ALL DETAILS ARE CORRECT all you have to do is ignore the warning and go ahead. I don’t know why the bank has such a software in place, why it does not change/correct the problem. By doing this they are only encouraging people to ignore warnings. That is what I did. Ignored the warning and went ahead transferring the money.
The funny thing is the employees are ignorant about this. They blink when you ask them or give you wrong/stupid suggestions/advice.
