Yesterday I wrote a story that began, “Suhasini was annoyed.” Mind you, no paper or pencil was involved, it was all in my mind. You see, the L&M and I were on our way to the physiotherapist’s. I was silent all through the drive on account of being busy, ‘creating’. Fortunately for me, the L&M is used to these silences that occur on and off, and so mostly leaves me alone.
The story was all about that goes wrong with Suhasini’s day. By the way, that’s a name I chose by examining and rejecting a few others. Some names I considered were of people I knew, but I didn’t want anyone to think that my story was in any way remotely connected to them. So out went all the familiar names. Anyway…
Suhasini’s maid calls out to her from the kitchen and she walks over only to find a new problem confronting her. She can feel a migraine coming on. Compounding things she can hear loud music coming from next door and she realises with dismay that her neighbour’s son is home from college. The doorbell rings and the postman hands her a letter.
As to what the letter says, I had no idea. It could be good news, it could be bad. By this point in the story, I had reached my destination. Soon I was prepped and while I lay there letting the low voltage electrical current do its work on me, I fleshed out more of the story to my satisfaction.
Forty-five minutes later, I had paid the fee, got the time for my next appointment and walked back to the car with the L&M. He asked something, I answered. And so it went back and forth as we got on our way. I smiled to myself as the car sped homeward. I was having a good day unlike the protagonist of my story Suhasini. I had just created a story. Now all I had to do was reach home and type it out.
“Suhasini was annoyed.” That’s how it begins, I told myself, and then… and then…
OMG! And then WHAT???!!!!
Why the heck was Suhasini annoyed? What did the maid tell her that made her day worse? What were the other things that irritated her? What did the letter say? How was it all resolved? Was it resolved at all or had things gotten worse?
To my utter horror I realised that I had absolutely no clue about Suhasini or her day. None at all. And that’s where things stand. I can say one thing for sure. As of now it is Shail, not Suhasini, who is annoyed. 😠
