What it’s all about: Five Sentence Fiction is about packing a powerful punch in a tiny fist. Each week Lillie McFerrin posts a one word inspiration, then anyone wishing to participate can write a five sentence story based on the prompt word. The word does not have to appear in the five sentences, and is just for direction. This week: OFFERING

“Take it,” she said holding out her cupped hand, “it’s yours!”

He stared with disbelief and longing at the shiny smooth pebble she was offering, the one he had coveted, but which she had seen first and pocketed.

He felt ashamed remembering her startled face that day at the beach, when he screamed and threw handfuls of sand at her, frustrated at having missed his chance.

Exasperated at him for creating a scene, his mother had given his fleshy bottom a solid whack, dragged him into the car and ordered the driver to take them home.

He thrilled now at the cold, smooth touch of the pebble as he held it briefly, and then quickly slipping it back into her palm said, with a child’s sense of fair-play, “No, it is actually yours! Keep it.”
