Really? Then why does bad happen to those who do only good? Yup, you got it right, I don’t believe it happens that way, not one teensy-weensy bit.
Here is what I think:
Good is a pretty choosy customer (just as Bad is, I bet), with a mind of its own. Your doing any amount of good is NOT going to get it to come running (or even walking at a sedate pace for that matter) to you. You see, it is not obliged to, in spite of all the posters and stories being shared about how good Good is, and absolutely none, least of all the poster makers, can guarantee that it will return favors.
BUT
Do good anyway, because that’s who you are; because you feel in your heart that that is the right thing to do; because it makes you happy; because you want someone else to be happy. All of them much better reasons than the expectation from Good to return via some circuitous route to scratch your back because you have been scratching other backs for good.
What say, agree or disagree?

The payback theory is good, to motivate, and I do that a lot, to myself, most often, 😀 and in consoling someone who’s having a bad day! But finally, what there is take away is just this, do good, if that is who you are- and you are good anyway 😀 🙂

I agree that’s it’s wise to do good and be an example for the younger ones. Doing good serves a purpose and def makes the world a better place, but since there is so much evil, competitiveness, facing rat races, I admit, it’s hard to be perfectly good all the time since sometimes you kind of need to do things considered bad just to survive. Also there are people who will hurt you and tear you apart, and I admit it’s very hard to avoid anger and anguish and forgive them, since you’re easily tempted to want to hurt them. Therefore, doing good can be a hard job sometimes, but you are right that we all should try to do good, and help out humanity in all ways possible.I personally feel there is really isn’t much good in this world, and evil outweighs it. Very sad to see.
I totally agree with you that good people suffer alot as well, while those who are really bad can get away with anything and have it all good. Why this happens..I don’t know. In my religion (Christianity) we’re told good people suffer so they can be closer to God since he himself suffered as well…something like that. But good post and I completely agree with this !
My point is how can you really claim good will get you good in return? 🙂

I do believe good comes back to you coz I believe in the circle of life. However I also agree that the reason for doing good should NOT be based on the foundation of the greed that you want good to happen to you – but the whole reason of being good or doing good is because it makes me happy and it elevates me.
A recent incident – the maid asked for money for her son’s treatment. I gave, not because I “wanted to do good” or “to keep her with me” but because a child needs treatment – she may be fooling me, but what if she is not? To have, to give.
Again, the base reason. 🙂

Super agree! Being good expecting for good is often ticket to disappointment.
Also, once I missed a bus and there was an accident. People were telling me- see, now you know that there is a God (bcs im not religious). Not a premonition either.
Does this make sense? Im sure lots of believers must have been there in the bus.
Agree with you.I am sure there were plenty of believers in that bus too. Besides how is God’s existence proved just because you got saved? What about the busload of people who died?!
I agree that you can’t do good for the reason of bringing good to you. Because you’ll ultimately be disappointed and frustrated. Which isn’t to say that a person shouldn’t strive to do good. It’s just that the reason behind the impulse should take into account that they may live each day selflessly and still not end up where they want to be.

I do good because it makes me feel good and that’s about it….nothing more nothing less. And expecting it back is the least I wish for…..
