Jealousy has an acrid stench to it that makes you reel when it assails your nostrils.

I steadied myself and unobtrusively scrutinized the face across mine, a face I have known for as long as I have lived, a face which was now positively glowing with happiness and pride.

She bent forward to hug me whispering, “Well done, baby!” and it hit me again, over and above the heady scent she had dabbed all over herself.

The green-eyed monster’s presence was now a certainty.

Suddenly the trophy in my hand felt like dead-weight, and I wished with all my heart that I had never bowed to my mother’s wishes and set out to live her dreams.
