“We can’t all be alike,” they said nodding sagely. “Differences between humans makes life interesting!” They then proceeded to systematically pound me into shape to fit their uniform molds. Whatever stuck out was ruthlessly broken; the rest was condemned unfit. As I writhed and gasped in agony, I heard them reiterate, differences made life interesting…

If we cant be beaten into submission, then we are outcasts..
the same people will then sit around and claim – “differences made life interesting”

Very true, Shail! Most of the time these lines are mouthed for effect without meaning them one bit.

Then they came for me–and there was no one left to speak for me.”

Good one! Some people come out of the pounding and stand out, some stay in the fetal shape throughout their lives.

Differences do make people unique, because you learn how to love and respect people no matter what physical characteristics/deformities/interests/beliefs they have. It leads to openness and new ideas. I have just written a post on the ‘Girl child’ where doing something in a different manner (even if outcome is same) is not tolerated. If you do something different or believe in something different, you’re not proper..etc. Perhaps this creates the concept of “peer pressure”, because if you’re not like your peers, you’re an outcast. Better to be an outcast and be yourself rather than going and doing what the crowd does.

Agree totally. Goes with the quote I have on the right side of this page:
“Better to write for yourself and have no public, than to write for the public and have no self.” ~ Cyril Connolly. I follow this 🙂
