A story and a question to illustrate how we tend to blame the victim.
“We blame the victim, so we can distance ourselves from the possibility of bad things ever happening to us. It can never happen to us because we’re smart, we follow the rules, we know better.
If you repeat this a million times it seems like simple logic. Our ideal society claims rape is bad, but in our real culture only 6% of rapists ever see a day in jail.” (From the post)
Let me ask a question from IHM
The story is retold by IHM and the question asked. You can read the various answers here.

Sigh … I really don’t want to comment but how come everyone knows who the criminal in that story is – but when it comes to laws and society, the woman always gets blamed?

They are not everyone Ritu, they are just a small very very small number of like-minded people who visit a common blog they are all interested in reading. And even there a few have differed. If we asked this question to random netizens, especially those that comment on TOI articles, we are not going to get this answer, are we?
People who comment here on my page generally agree with me. But that is no indication that all out there agree with what I say. It only shows the possibility of like-minded people are out there. Same logic applies above I guess.

This is exactly whats wrong with our world today,
We live in a cocoon now a days , we believe all the badness happens to others alone and we relish in this hubris, until misfortune befalls us.
Its so sad.

True, Like it says in the post, “The fundamental attribution error is based on the assumption that bad things happen to bad people and good things happen to good people.”
It is sad indeed.
Thanks for the comment,. Welcome to Shail’s Nest.

Oh yeah, “it would never happen to me, I am better. I follow the rules” attitude at work. 😦

Its sad to note, how while we sit looking at it as “it hasnt happened to me…yet” view, we know exactly who the culprit is and most of us will look at the Thugs and hope they get capital punishment…but when it comes to real life and should we come across someone in our circle who was the victim, I know there will always be that someone or other with the irritating response that the woman was on the wrong…in the process we forget the crime, the criminal etc..instead we focus on the victim to make ourselves feel righteous and strong….*sigh*

I was just thinking how the rapists walk to the courtroom, head held high, accompanied by family members, while the victim and family cower in shame. As a society our heads are screwed on all wrong. 😦

WHat do i say to this … sad
IDEAL society you say but do we really have a ieal society ..

It IS sad. Ideal society is used here only as a society that condemns all wrong doing. We do condemn rape as a society.in the ‘ideal’ sense. But conviction rates in reality are so low. 😦
