The draft

- a 55-er

I located the draft and began reading looking for clues.

What pushed her over the edge? Abused and misused all her life, when had she revolted, locking the world out only to be locked away herself? She was now unreachable in her haze of self-deluding serenity.

I was no expert, but recognized a great novel-in-the-making.

Dirty girl

- a 55 word story

The man was standing at the corner.

Before she could blink he had exposed himself.

Shocked she hurried home and related with revulsion what had happened.

SLAP! SLAP!

Confused and in pain she looked at her mother.

“Why did you look at him, you dirty girl??”

She learnt: Don’t talk about your experiences to elders.

To the grown ups: Your anger and frustration at the world and life is understandable.  But remember not to take it out on your children. The evils of the world your children may chance upon were not put there by them, but by your own generation. Don’t hold the children responsible for it. I have seen, still see, parents shouting at children because they themselves are scared, confused or angry about situations over which they don’t have control.  The best thing, if shout you must, is to go look in the mirror and shout at your own self.  Don’t alienate children over no fault of theirs.

Enticing agony

- a 55 word story

A thousand mice were gnawing his insides.

He stared with distaste at his lunch-box.

No fried stuff, sweets, or salt were the doctor’s orders. Damn.

At this rate stress would get him earlier, he thought as he bent over the figures.

Big fat samosas and juicy jelebis had begun their intricate dance steps to entice.

Transformation

– a 55 word story

There was no plausible reason she should have given up home and hearth for someone like him with a girl in every port.

Yet, she had…. willingly. Love is strange. It makes you do things you wouldn’t otherwise.

Her name was tainted forever; but, she blossomed. Her whole life transformed.

Unfortunately, so did he, again.

The rift

- a 55-word story

He smiled when he heard her humming.

She had been silent and brooding since weeks.

His queries only got monosyllabic answers.

Work pressures, he consoled himself.

He tried to make up by being extra helpful around the house.

The next day he found the note. His smile vanished.

The song had not been for him….

Returns of revenge

- a 55 word story

The gait was unmistakable. It was him. I nudged Rinky and took aim.

We cackled at the comical look of surprise on his face. The ripened tomatoes had found their mark unerringly.

So did the cane that Dad held. It looked like the old gardener had seen us filch his precious tomatoes and had tattled.
